Volkshochschule Harburg
"Correction does much,
but encouragement does more"
(Johann Wolfgang von Goethe)
The german word "Volkshochschule" (people's high school) stands for a educational adult-oriented institution, which offer at relative low cost courses in several topics as computer skills, sports, music, languages, etc.
During the WS 2001 until the WS 2002 i attend some german language courses, at the east side of Harburg, to improve my skills with that language.
All these time i decide to have only one teacher for all the courses: Tony Huber (Photo), a writter, philosopher, and the prototype of inspired educator. As in the TUHH you could forget to developt a good friendship with any of the "Professor" (... Dr.Ing.Ph.D.h.c. ...) due they are very busy, that means V.I.P. for the students, to find this other version of teachers was very appreciated.
With the other teacher at the same school, Manfred (Manni) Hedde, we invest many hours speaking about the literature written by Toni (theater papers, short movies, and books as the "Meinetwegen" ) and the articles from Manfred for local newspapers. By the way, many times they asked me for the complicated political situation in homeland. They agree that isn´t a great idea to go to live in Castro´s Cuba.
On the words of Toni and Manni, the VHS (Volkshochschule) is a "very socialist model" for education with adults, and they were very proud of that; maybe they found a match in the VHS between their own lifestyle and thoughts, and the this educational model...
From the point of view of quality-and-performance for language-learning, is not possible to compare the VHS-model, with the Goethe Institute, but indeed, it is an alternative, good for a specific market. However expensive, the "Goethe" is the best for many things, as the organization, the teachers, supporting material and activities.
The last time i saw Toni, was in the presentation of his new book called "Staub / Sätzlinge" at the Thalia Theater Hamburg-Altona, in June 6, 2005.
This kind of people (the thinkers) makes the difference in any educative process (formal or informal), that means, they become a effective milestone, much more than some Doctors, some Ph.D holders or even, some Scientifics (!). From the "Rawcoast" of Toni Huber, i extract the following passage:
**** Die Wüste und die Küste ****
Küste küßte Wüste wüst................. La costa besó el desierto salvajemente
Wüste wüßte nicht wohin................ El desierto no supo en donde
Küste wüßte wohl wohin,................ La costa sabia muy bien donde
küßte, wüßte gern noch meer.......... besó, quisiera mucho más.
